biography

⤑ Daniel Armstrong Born 29 August, 1980, to an affluent family in Denver. Colorado. He was the third child of five, with two younger sisters, and an older brother and sister. Father: Jacob, Aeronautics Engineering Manager with Lockheed Martin. Retired. Mother: Sonya (nee Lancaster), Senior Program Manager, Propulsion Systems, Lockheed Martin. Retired.

⤑ Childhood Daniel had a fairly typical upper middle class upbringing, with mandatory little league where he was exiled to right field. He was relatively healthy, though he suffered from minor ailments: suffered from asthma, various seasonal allergies, needed glasses at an early age, and was very academics-oriented and reserved, which made him a bit of an outsider. His grade school life revolved around scholastic book club, science fairs, mathletics, and verbal abuse. In middle school, he was moved to Kent Denver School. Daniel was a gifted student with an affinity for computers and physics. He wasn't particularly involved in any sort of social scene. His focus was still his studies, with computer & video games, unrequited love, and comic collecting rounding out his activities. His senior project, a robotics system designed to select and play the user's desired compact disc from a pre-defined collection caught the attention of several college recruiters. He went on to graduate as Saludatorian of his private school graduating class.

⤑ University Sizeable scholarships to various computer science programs came his way, and Daniel ultimately chose to attend Stanford University. The change of environment to California, and one better equipped to understand and nurture his interests, brought out his social side. His skin cleared up. He got a tan, started exercising, and making friends. Daniel lost his virginity at age twenty-three when a woman, frustrated after months of her flirting being completely ignored (not noticed), pounced on him after a study session in her dorm room. He added a new interest to his list, though it had never really been a priority in his life.

⤑ Career Cisco was the first company Daniel worked for, thanks to an internship he participated in during his junior year. He was brought on as a data security analyist. He got his feet wet improvingdata security solutions for clients. He had an immediate impact on systems performance and had a few patents in filed in his name. Unfortunately, he didn't enjoy the grind of data security and looked for greener pastures in the robotics field. After a long search, Daniel moved to Orange County in 2006 to accept a Robotics and Vision Engineer position at iRobot. He spent four years developing improvements for collision detection and pattern algorithms. In 2009, a friend of a friend turned him on to an opportunity with Google that was right up his alley. He became a founding developer at Google X, working on their autonomous vehicles and Google's Self-Driving Car project. It was a position he maintained until Google's restructuring in late 2015. He applied to be part of the Opportunity Mission as an Information Technology Passenger, focused on automation systems.

⤑ Training Daniel took to mission training very well. He was a positive, motivating force to teams to which he was assigned to work. He specialized in keeping the team's composure in stressful situation, thinking through issues, and encouraging perseverance even through seemingly impossible odds. During downtime, he was eager to organize social events for anyone interested in an attempt to build camaraderie and friendships. But he doesn't consider himself a leader, just someone with a positive mental attitude. Although he was in very good health, his medical records showed he was prone to respiratory issues when he was younger. Daniel was obsessed with his packing and getting as much as he could into his limited baggage allowance.

A trip to Daytona Beach to celebrate the completion of flight training led to a drunken few minutes of ecstasy and a walk of shame for him the next day. Awkward.
